SENTAI FILMWORKS LICENSES "AZUMANGA DAIOH"
HOUSTON, January 20, 2016 – Sentai Filmworks is proud to announce its latest acquisition: the classic, offbeat comedy Azumanga Daioh! Based on the original 1999 manga series written and illustrated by Kiyohiko Azuma, Azumanga Daioh is a witty romp into the misadventures of six high-school girls – Chiyo, Tomo, Yomi, Sakaki, Kagura, and a transfer student from Osaka, aptly nicknamed “Osaka.” Under the “guidance” of some rather peculiar teachers, the girls try their best to survive wacky school culture festivals, bread-eating contests, a teacher obsessed with seeing his female student in short shorts, awkward (and sometimes dangerous!) trips to Chiyo's summer home, and more!
The anime series was directed in 2002 by Hiroshi Nishikiori (Trinity Seven, I’m Gonna be an Angel!, GAD GUARD), with Ichiro Okouchi (Negima!, CODE GEASS: Lelouch of Rebellion ) in charge of series composition. Production was handled by J.C.Staff (Honey and Clover, Nodame Cantabile, Detective Opera Milky Holmes).
Azumanga Daioh will soon be released on home video as part of its Sentai Selects line of classic animated features, in both dubbed and subtitled formats.http://www.sentaifilmworks.com/news/sentai-filmworks-licenses-azumanga-daioh
I wonder if this will be a new dub?
Since they're redoing the subs, I'm trying to remember if there were any questionable parts that ADV took liberty with?
I like how there are going to be 4 official translations (and two fan/scanlations) of this series and they're each a little different.
Most notable in my memory was "beans of knowledge"/"grains of truth."
I also remember them just outright ignoring the whole "blue three"/"Bruce Lee" pun and translating it literally.
Others that I can remember off the top of my head are Chiyo trying to say tongue twisters, and Osaka being asked those riddles/trick questions and getting every single one right on the first try.
In the karaoke scene, "Time Pavement" turned into "Diamond Passes By" and "The Heart is a Girl's Parachute" became "Forget this Parachute and See When My Heart Falls".
No, don't do that to your heart he could break an artery or something.
The latter half of the latter one was kind of a straightforward translation according to this here lyric page, save for a hit taken from getting it to rhyme.http://www.animelyrics.com/anime/azumangadaioh/parachute.htm
Though, the translation on this page could be straight from ADV themselves, as the western release of the "Let's Sing" album came with translated lyrics.
>>169>"Diamond Passes By"
Um, I'm pretty sure that was "Time Will Pass Us By."
That's our Geibuchan-chan~♪
i find it interesting that in the dub they both have a dub of the song and the original it it. also, do yomi and tomo ever notice that there's someone singing on the radio who sounds identical to their friend?
It's been announced that Azumanga will be released on Hulu as well!!
It's live nowhttp://www.hulu.com/azumanga-daioh
We should arrange an /azu/ viewing party!
Interesting that they went with art that didn't have all of the main six girls on it.
^It's a pretty weird cover in general. What the hell is it even suppose to suggest to someone who sees only the front cover and has no idea what the series is about? And then Chiyo's knee sticking out…
This would have been a good opportunity to use Azuma's portrait art from a few years back, but Sentai will be Sentai, I guess.
I see what you mean. This is the cover for the DVDs I own, and it does a better job of portraying the series, I feel.
On the plus side, I think it's fairly safe to assume most people that know about anime know about Azumanga anyway, but getting new people interested is important too. It's a good thing that we're even getting a re-release, to be fair.
Just to be clear this will be inner cover. The other one of the culturefest will be the front ccover.
Oh, that makes a bit more sense. I think I still prefer >>466
, I can almost feel Chiyo staring into my soul with that other cover.
Is this right before Chiyo notices that she got her foot caught on the jump ropes and is about to eat some pavement?
Maybe if Osaka (and Kagura?) had the strength of a gorilla.
I got rid of the cover altogether, for all I know it's still rotting away in my closet.>>166
I spent ten dollars at a flea market for the class album around six or seven years ago. Is it seriously worth that much?
I wouldn't doubt it, I spent over $80 to get my copy of the Class Album six years ago. Is it weird that I still want the Sentai release even if I already have Class Album?
Well, she does have a flat chest for unclear reasons and is envious of Sakaki's boobs…
It looks as though a few places have set their release date for May 3rd for the new box set, though I haven't been able to find any official confirmation of it.
Disregard that, the Sentai website itself is selling it on that date too, so that's practically confirmation.http://www.sentaifilmworks.com/Store/UPC/814131019981
Great that they're being re-released, but I'm not one to buy new sets of things I already own. Hopefully this brings in new fans.
I've decided not too buy this because since buying the rights to azu, every single azu video has been taken off youtube, including ones that don't even remotely break fair use laws. This is just another morally corrupt comany and I'm pissed they'd do this to azumanga.
reading the first sentence my 1st thought was "live action" movie! cool! then….meh
Actually that's King Records, not sentai filmworks. They've always owned the anime and all kinds of other shows too, they just upped the ante on copyright in general. Not that it really affects me since I'll always edit the show to hell and back before I'm done with it.
Also now there's reports that they're bringing it to Bluray for Japan, bundled with a soundtrack as a bonus, retailing at 30,240 yen ($274.56 US)?? http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2016/05/21-1/azumanga-daioh-receives-5-disc-japanese-bluray-box-release
…Let's uh, hope the price lowers on that and that it doesn't just stay there? I think the price'll drive people away since that was an average price for just buying the dvd before Sentai Filmworks re-released it, but even now that this provides an inconvenience since I've just bought the new DVD set, I'm rather torn because I'd personally prefer being able to watch my OzzyMangoes on a higher resolution than 480p.
